A Review of the 1960 Season
Ken Dowding and Ron Lynch were both selected to play for the Club Cricket Conference v MCC at Lords.
On 20th May Chingford had the honour of hosting the President of the Club Cricket Conference XI, we think this was to celebrate the Club being 75 years old. The CCC totalled 179-9, with Robin Hobbs taking 3-51 while in reply Chingford made 141-8 to earn a draw – Norman Fowler top scoring with 43. A further part of the Celebrations saw Chingford host the MCC on Tuesday 9 Aug. The MCC gave Chingford a real caning in the morning session, reaching 199-3 at lunch and eventually declaring on 327-5. This is believed to be the highest score ever against any Chingford side. Undeterred Skipper Ken Dowding led the Chingford reply only to be robbed of his century for on 95, he trod on his wicket while hitting a six!
The 1st eleven under Ken Dowding had another successful season, losing only two games. Remarkably on 25 June we bowled out Buckhurst hill for just 29, with Buddy Jessop returning figures of 10-8-4-6 , while Buddy repeated his 6 wicket haul in the rout of Highgate who were dismissed for 49. Robin Hobbs also had a six wicket haul against Edmonton (6-48) as did Terry Dennehy with 6-38 against Unilever.
George Chapman scored 101 not out in the home second eleven fixture with Highgate.
The Sunday As bowled out Wembley – the first time they had been dismissed in over a year – with Buddy Jessop claiming 5-43, but despite 78 from Ted Sandrock we fell two runs short of victory and had to settle for a draw. Derek Harwood hit a century in the home game against Upminster.
